Sales vs shipments
A sale is a contract; the grain or meat may ship months later. "Sold so far" is everything shipped plus everything sold but not shipped yet. Cancelled sales show up as negative net sales.
Marketing years
Corn, soybeans and sorghum run September to August, wheat June to May, soybean meal and oil October to September, and beef and pork the calendar year. Sales for next year's crop are counted in "net sales" here.
Why it matters
Export demand feeds into USDA's ending stocks, which moves price and basis. A fast pace vs last year and USDA's forecast is a sign of strong demand; a slow one, the opposite.
