Basis in cents vs. the futures month shown (Z = Dec, X = Nov). Country elevators, current delivery, state average of regions (a few states only quote new-crop bids, marked). Source: USDA AMS Market News. Wheat is the cash price for the state's main class (SRW, HRW or spring wheat). That's every state USDA publishes daily bids for; Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia and the rest don't have a USDA report, so the nearest state is the best guide.
Cash price minus futures. -38Z means your elevator pays 38¢ under December corn futures. Basis is local: freight, storage and demand nearby.
Futures can rally and your check can still shrink if basis widens. Harvest basis is usually the weakest of the year and firms up as bins empty.
Compare today's basis to the same week last year and to processors nearby to see whether it's strong or weak for the season. Tap a state for the trend.
